Jade Has a Boo Boo
Surely I Can Count This As School Hours
What an Awesome Review
Erin over at The Mom Buzz did a review of our goat milk soap. She did a great job and I was so flattered I had to let you all know about it.
Be sure to check it out! :)

The Lion King
We've been on a Disney kick lately.
Grandma got the children the Lion King Soundtrack. Here is a shot of Hewitt "reading" the soundtrack booklet.
And here is Greyden and Hewitt singing:
They're singing Hakuna Matata.
It means no worries.
That song is ok, and I don't mind them singing it. There is one song that gets them in trouble, however. It's Scar's song.
You see, during that song, the hyenas sing, "NO King, No King, tra la la la la la."
Even that isn't a problem. The problem is in Scar's response. Hewitt likes to go around quoting it. In a rather loud voice.
For those of you non-Lion King experts, the response is, "IDIOTS! I WILL BE KING!"
When my four year old goes around screaming "IDIOTS! I WILL BE KING!" at all his older siblings, (and any other adults that happen to be around) - well, it can cause some interesting responses.
Fortunately, Jim and I are fast learners. We've learned not to sing Lion King songs for hours before going out in public. :)

Child Training
Every good mother knows that she can do all the children's chores 10 times faster and 100 times better than they can.
Case in point:
But I have to constantly remind myself that being a good mom is about training my children to do things. It is not about doing it for them. That only leads to lazy, selfish children and a burnt out, screaming mom.
So, this is my public declaration that it is ok that my floors are not spotless and my flatware still has food crusted on it. And remember my sliding glass door? My children are learning how to clean - and they're getting better at it every day!
And yes, sometimes there will be spilled milk. :)

The Running of the Bulls (I mean dolls)
Well, Indigo decided to go running with Lala. Now for most normal children, that would involve picking up Lala, and running.
But not my children.
No. For my children, it first involves attaching a belt to your waist. Then it requires attaching another belt to the doll. Like this:
Then - you run! (Like this):
I have to admit, I don't think that Indigo came up with this ingenious plan all by herself. I believe she got some help from Emery. I also believe the actual game involves her pretending to be a horse. I'm not really sure, I was too busy dodging the flopping doll.
It's never a dull moment! :)

Corn Cob Man
Emery got creative while shelling and made a face with hair:
Can you see it?

Shower Girl
Indigo decided to join me in the shower. (No I didn't get a photo of that) LOL!
She had to wait for me to get dressed and she just looked so cute, I had to get a photo.

Autumn on the River
We were invited to be a vendor at Autumn on the River, a local festival in Bethlehem, Indiana. It was a beautiful weekend. Sunny and 60's. The children had a great time. The National Guard was there with a climbing wall. Children 8 and over were allowed to climb it for free.
Colter and Emery were able to climb to the top of even the "difficult" section. The guardsman told Jim that they were only the second and third kids to make it to the top all day. The first was a very lanky teenager. (Yes, that's pride you detect in my tone.)
Brett and Cole (and sometimes Emery and Fletcher) are awesome salesmen. Here are the two of them in front of our soap:
Emery's highlight of the day was during Radio Disney's visit. He won the hula hoop hot potato game (hold hands and pass the hula hoop around each person without letting go, person with the hula hoop is out). For that he got to pick a gift; he chose Sleeping Beauty on DVD.
Fletcher was runner up in the crazy dancing contest. Mom (who was still selling soap) got to hear the announcer say, "Careful Fletcher, before you hurt yourself - Mom's gonna love all those grass stains." It seems part of his crazy dancing involved throwing himself onto the ground - very Fletcher. :)
At the end of the day, there was a balloon glow which the children unanimously decided to stay and watch. Here is the family while they were filling the balloon.
And here it is all lit up:
It was a great end to a great day!

Not Yet
Indigo came into the living room a couple of days ago from the direction of my bathroom. I don't usually pay much attention to that as she is now potty trained and uses my bathoom all the time.
However, I did notice something particularly peculiar about her, so I told her to come closer to me.
Yep, her face definitely had the look of a painted clown.
It seems she found some extra lipstick I keep in my bathroom drawer.
For a two year old, she actually did a pretty good job putting it on. It wasn't all over her face or anything.
I thought the whole thing pretty comical (Brett had never done anything like that). So I calmly told her she was too young to wear lipstick and she was going to have to wait til she was older.
This was her response (note the lipstick still on her face):
Oh my, she's such a girly-girl. :)

What a Chef!
I need to brag on Brett a little bit. She made homemade chicken pot pies for dinner. She made and rolled out the crust without any supervision. She also laid out the crusts and crimped them.
I meant to get a photo of them before we started eating.
But, what can I say? We were hungry!
Brett is becoming quite the homemaker. I tell her all the time she's not allowed to get married and leave until she has Indigo and Jade completely trained to take her place! :)
She did want me to share with everybody that lard definitely makes the best pie crust. It seems she discovered that because Hewitt can't have butter!

WHAT is That NOISE??!!
I heard this horrid screaching yesterday. I couldn't imagine what the source was, and then I discovered this:
You may ask, "Who is that?"
That is my sweet daughter, Jade.
You also may ask, "What is she doing?"
I'll tell you.
She's screaming into a really big funnel and broadcasting her screech throughout the house as it bounces off the walls and echoes through each room.
It's not a very pleasant sound. You'll have to trust me on that one. :)

Sweet Potato Harvest
Here is a photo of this year's sweet potato harvest. It's about 150 pounds. Last year we grew 118 pounds.
The children harvested the sweets all by themselves (so I'm sure they missed some that are still in the ground). Hopefully they'll sprout next year.
I was a bit disappointed by the harvest. But it was extremely dry this summer and we didn't water the garden at all. Still 150 pounds isn't too shabby.
Don't you love the size of this HUGE sweet potato Fletcher is holding? It weighs over 4 pounds!
Do you want to know my secret? We use sawdust as bedding in the chicken coop. We grew this sweet potato in the old coop bedding that got dumped in the garden last fall. Sweet potatoes generally like sandy soil. But with our clay soil, we fool them by using lots of spent sawdust.
I'll have to report on how it tastes after we've eaten it. Don't worry, we scrub it really well. :)

More Free Goat Milk Soap
So here are the new rules. Since the holidays are approaching, we're going to give away two free bars of soap to three winners!
There is just one condition, you have to give one of the bars of soap to a friend or family member (the soaps make a really great stocking stuffer).
All you have to do to enter is place a comment on this post. Just tell me which soap you want for yourself and which soap you want as a gift for someone else.
Some of the new scents are ready, so check out the goat milk soap at goatmilkstuff.com and let me know which ones you want to win!
You can earn extra entries by telling me which one of my posts is your favorite or by sharing your favorite Thanksgiving scent and whether or not you think it would make a good soap. (Brett says she doesn't want to smell like turkey :D)
We'll draw the winners on November 15th (if I can get my children to wait that long...)

But You Said...
Hewitt has been having difficulty getting dressed lately. Most of the time he would prefer to spend the entire day in his pajamas. He already ripped a thousand holes in his Pirates pajamas by running around outside in them.
So this morning, when he got dressed in pajamas again, I told him, "Hewitt, go and get a pair of pants out of your drawer and put them on."
Well, he obeyed. Unfortunately, he came back looking like this:
Our conversation went something like this:
Me: "Hewitt, honey, those pants don't fit you."
Hewitt: "But they were in my drawer."
Me: "But they don't fit."
Hewitt: "But they were in my drawer."
Me: "But they're too big."
Hewitt: "But they were in my drawer."
Me: "But they keep falling down."
Hewitt: "But they were in my drawer."
[Astute readers may have remembered by this point that I told him to get pants out of his drawer and put them on. Exhausted mothers will understand that I had completely forgotten that I had told him to get pants out of his drawer.]
Me: {heaving big sigh} "Fine, go get a shirt."
You can't win them all... :)

And the Free Goat Milk Soap Winner Is...
The Vest Family!
Our free goat milk soap contest ended today. We printed out everyone's name (and extras for those of you who found mistakes) and placed them in a bowl. Indigo did a great job picking out the winner.
The only problem - each one of the children wanted to pick out a winner. So you know what that means - I have to run another contest. So stay tuned and we'll let you know the details of the new contest soon!
Congratulations, Pam (I sent you an email)!

What a Handsome Dude!
What an Imp!
Hewitt is pretty tough for a four year old - not surprising since he has four older brothers. He's also rather physical. He's always tackling somebody.
His current pattern is to charge any adult male (he doesn't do it with the women) straight on - aiming with his head. Of course, if you're an adult male, you can figure out where the head of a four year old is going to hit.
Jim and I have tried to stop it, but Hewitt just gets so excited to see people that he just charges at them!
Last night we were out at a Harvest party, and Hewitt was playing around with Garry, a friend of ours. Fortunately Garry was wise to Hewitt, and continually prevented a direct attack.
While Hewitt was playing his game, he told Garry, "You're coming home with us."
Garry calmly replied, "Where would I sleep?"
Without missing a beat, Hewitt responded, "You'll sleep with the goats."
OK - maybe I need to also start working on hospitality with him. He's such an imp! :)

The Dark Boards
We love Indiana, and miss very few things about the east coast (mostly family and friends). But Indiana does have one peculiarity that drives us crazy - its time zone.
Indiana is in the eastern time zone. While that is convenient in some respects, it does have its pitfalls. The main one being the fact that during the summer, the sun doesn't set until after 9:00 pm, and it is light out until almost 10:00 pm.
This makes it very difficult to put children to bed and actually get them to go to sleep.
For years, I've been saying I'm going to order shades or sew thicker curtains. I guess Jim finally decided that I wasn't going to get around to it any time soon. So in typical Jim fashion, he came up with his own solution. This:
Yep, that's plywood in the windows of my house. He calls them the "dark boards" - no, not "dart boards". Fortunately they are not attached. We take them in and out as we need to (especially when company is coming).
They are really effective. Absolutely no light gets into the rooms. But it does make me feel kinda trashy to have my windows covered with plywood. I REALLY need to make some time this winter to sew some heavy curtains. :)

What a Stinker!
About 2 am the other night, Jade started crying. I let her cry for a bit and then gave up. I got out of bed and got her a drink. She gulped the whole thing down so I gave her a kiss and went back to bed.
The moment I laid down, she started crying again. Except this time it was more of a scream. Since I knew her diaper was fine, she wasn't thirsty, and she wasn't sick, I ignored her. For over 30 minutes. Finally she won, and I got back out of bed.
When I went into the bedroom, Indigo was plastered next to Brett (where Jade usually sleeps). So I moved Indigo back to her spot next to the wall, and put Jade in the middle next to Brett. I didn't even give her a kiss. I just went back to bed.
I never heard another peep out of her - the little stinker. :)
PJ
What a Sweetie!
I was feeling kinda blue the other day and was sitting on my bed, alone, taking a break. Indigo silently walked into my room and climbed up on the bed with me. She looked at me in the face, then snuggled up next to me and started stroking my leg.
She kept that up for a minute, and then looked up at me. She quite solemnly said, "I'm making you feel better."
And you know what - it worked! :)

Our Jericho Walls
Jim brought home more cups from the garbage. They were only supposed to unwrap one package, but when my back was turned, they opened them all! So they decided to build the walls of Jericho.
For those of you who don't remember the Bible story - the Israelites marched around the walls of Jericho and then the walls fell.
My children march around singing the VeggieTales song -
Keep walking, and you won't knock down our walls.
Keep walking, but she isn't gonna fall.
It's plain to see that your brains are very small
To think walking, will be knocking down our walls.
And then - splatt! the cups just mysteriously fall down (I forgot to get a picture of that).
It keeps them entertained for hours!

Stress Free!
OK, not quite stress free. But greatly reduced. :)
The Apple Festival went really well. The children did great and we sold lots of soap!
I'm still processing the whole accident thing. I'm not sure I'm going to feel better til I return that teddy bear. Everytime I get into our vehicle, it looks at me and I'm reminded.
But the house is finally clean and most of the stuff is packed away, so my stress level went down many degrees.
Now for a good night's sleep...

On the Accident Scene
Last Thursday we were running errands. We were barely two miles from our house when we came upon the scene of an accident. There was a jeep that had run off the road right into a tree. There was a guy standing there, and I stopped to ask him if he was ok. He said he had called 911, but the lady was still in the jeep.
I immediately pulled over, told the children to stay put, and ran back to the jeep. The guy was standing back from the car, but when I looked in, there was a woman on her side, scrunched down, half under the steering wheel (which is why I hadn't seen her when I first pulled up).
She had not been wearing her seat belt, but the air bag had exploded.
I immediately climbed half in the car and started talking to her and holding her hands and rubbing her hair. She was having difficulty breathing and her leg was obviously broken (the foot was at a 90 degree angle). She was at a very awkward angle and was trying to climb out, so I was supporting her head and upper body while trying to get her to remain calm.
I found out her name was Pam, and I got her daughter's name and phone number as well. By this time, a neighbor had arrived and she called her daughter. I got a brief medical history (she was not very healthy) and asked her if she remembered the impact. She told me that she had blacked out before hitting the tree and she didn't remember if she was speeding.
She was really struggling to breathe and kept telling me she was dying. I kept her as calm as I could (assuring her she was not dying) as we waited for the first emergency responder. Best guess it took 8-10 minutes for the first EMT to arrive (although it felt like an hour).
When he got there, I had to step back. At that point, I just kept talking to Pam and was running and fetching stuff for the EMT guy. He did a quick assessment, and then he had me help him try to get the jeep top off. They were going to need to stabilize her in the jeep before getting her out.
We weren't able to get the top off (the impact had jammed it), but when I was trying, a little teddy bear fell out of the visor.
Shortly after this, more emergency workers started arriving. Pam's daughter arrived as well, and I tried to comfort her. People kept asking me if I was a nurse, I told them, "No, I just have 8 children."
It took them almost a full hour to extract her from the jeep. They had a helicopter come in to fly her to the local trauma hospital. The helicopter landed about 20 feet from our vehicle (where the children still were). They got to watch it land and take off. (The only cool part about the whole thing).
Once Pam was on the way to the hospital, I spoke with the police officers, and then we left. I was too shaken up to run errands, so we went home.
On the way home, we passed the teddy bear lying in the middle of the road. It must have fallen out when they towed the jeep. We turned around and picked it up.
I called the hospital and found out that Pam had arrived, but they didn't have any other information. When I called again that evening, they told me she was not in the hospital. I asked if that meant she had passed away, and the ER lady told me there had only been one fatality and it was not a female.
I have no idea where Pam is or how she is doing. She was so banged up that I have trouble believing she was released after 8 hours. Transferred maybe?
I called her daughter and left a message, but I haven't heard back, and I don't want to call again. But I'm very anxious to find out how she is. And I would really like to return the teddy bear.
As stressful as the whole situation was, I am so thankful that I was there. I think the worst thing about being in pain, is if you have to endure it alone. At least I didn't leave her alone.

I Think I Might Be Stressed
I can't believe it is Friday at 9:30. What happened to my week? Where did it go?
Tomorrow we are going to an Apple Festival to sell soap. It is our first endeavor into the festival world. Normally we just sell soap from the house, or at some stores. But we were invited to attend this festival, and we just couldn't turn it down.
So we've been frantically preparing for it all week. But things seem to be conspiring against me.
First I had computer trouble and was without the computer. Then yesterday when we were going to run our errands, we happened upon a car accident. I got intimately involved in that (I'll blog about that next week). Once the victim was on the helicopter, I was able to leave, but I was too shaken up to run errands, and pretty much got nothing accomplished for the rest of the day.
So I spent today running errands that should have been run yesterday. Which completely threw off my groove.
Since I had to run up to the computer to print off a couple of signs, I took a moment to breathe. Normally blogging is a big stress reliever for me, so I decided to blog. But the only thing I could think to say was, "I'm STRESSED!"
There, I feel much better. (Not really, but maybe typing it will start me on the road to feeling better.)
So, I've gotta run. I've still got to
- unmold soap
- cut soap
- finish packing
- shower
- pack food for tomorrow
- cut out the signs I printed
- sleep
Oh my!
PJ
